Library Orientation: TKW

Reflect on the library orientation and how important research is to you as a scholar. Find an article in the library database that might help you in your analysis of The Known World.

Post a summary of your article for homework here and how it ties into your research question/topic.

We will complete the book for Tuesday, Sept. 28.

Library Review

Today we went to the library and learned how to research through the databases that the school offers. I have taken the little seminar a couple times now and for some reason this time it was the most helpful. When I get to a computer I always seem to forget what the librarian was teaching us but this time I went back and did it myself and it was a lot easier. I also find what Professor Sabir asked very helpful, The criticing for The Known World. That will help a whole lot when it comes to chosing a topic to write our essay about.

It is importatnt to research for assignments because it gives your more knowledge about what you are writing on and helps you understand the topic better.

Library Orientation

The library orientation was very useful, it taught us how to get articles online in a more efficient way. The orientation was particularly useful to me because I will be browsing a lot of journal articles for my Nursing classes that I will be taking in the future.

The article that I found discusses the statistical information on free African American slaveholders in Virginia found in the introduction of the book by Edward P. Jones, "The Known World."

I am particularly interested in this topic because it was rare for me to hear that free African American were actually slaveholders, specially in that time were racism was more an issue that it is now.

I learnded how to search for a specific subject in the serach engine on the computer. The libraian also showed us how to look up a certain subject in a magazine article as well as a the citations the author used to make his article. We can also email the aritcle to ourselves and we can read over it a summarize at home. The libraian also showed us how to look up different topics on priviliege that we could use in our essay. That if we are transfereing to a four year college we will be using scholar journals a lot in our essay writing. We can also break down the publication dates and full text of the aritcle to refine our search instead of looking through articles that are short and not finished.

With the knowledege that I learned in the library orientation I found an article called “Exploring our Choice to live in or out of Privilege .” In this article it discusses how people take on a role cumalitive privilege and how individuals who are provileged spend someof there lifes through the power of dimensions and cumalitive privielge. Individuals who are in privilege can afford to spend some of their cumulative privilege or power in dimensions of their life where they are out of privilege.

Library Review

We were in the library to see a presentation by the reference librarian on how to use the library website and find articles, books, etc that we will need for our essay assignment. I found it easy to navigate and found numerous articles that reminded me of TKW. I focused on civil rights because of the issue of slavery in the book.

Library Orientation

The library orientation was very useful, I learned our library has much to offer and I will take advantage of it in the future days. It is often hard to know where and how to begin their research. Today I learned to task definition, seek information strategies, how to locate sources, find information within the sources and use of information. It is nice, I can check out the COA library materials from my computer.

The book TKW’s article is very interesting to me. I did never hear or think before that black people also used to have black masters. It brought the idea of money, statu, and privilege to my mind’s surface so I picked the book called The Meritocracy Myth by Stephen J. McNamee and Robert K. Miller, Jr. from COA library’s data base. The Meritocracy Myth tells about racism and discrimination in growing inequality of the twenty-first century.

Library Orientation

The library orientation was very important and helpful because it enables us to find the exact articles and books in a short amount of time. The orientation was very helpful to me because I spent hours to find the book that I wanted. I used to waste a lot of time, but the library orientation will help me use every minute that I have.
The article that I found demonstrates how former U.S. President George Washington came to realize that slavery was a flawed institution. It also talks about more plausible source of Washington's incipient questioning of slavery is his decision in 1763 to reduce the size of his tobacco crop, which culminated in 1766 when he had stopped growing it altogether.
I am interested in this topic because U.S former presidents owned slaves and used them every day; at the same time, they believed in the theory, at that time, that all men are created equally. This is very interesting, to me, because it was never easy for everybody to give freedom to the slaves eventhough they know it's wrong to claim people as properties.

Library Orientation

Today we visited the library for an orientation on article researching. We received handouts and we were informed of all of the various databases there are to search for different kinds of articles.

This orientation helped me because I now can search for articles in a more efficient way rather than going on Google and spending hours finding credible sources.

I looked at a few articles that had to do with slavery to practice using the library database because I am not sure yet of what I want to discuss in my essay.
