Note: The writer, Sapphire, known for her book PUSH, adapted for the film, Precious is at Marcus Books in Oakland, MLK at 40th Street, tomorrow, July 21, 2011. She has a new book out, The Kid, (about Precious's child) and will be reading from it. The reading is free.
Tonight there is a screening at the African American Art and Culture Complex in SF, 762 Fulton Street @ Webster, on the Crisis in the Congo. There will be a discussion following it. It is free and the film is 26 minutes long.

Free write about today’s presentations.
Today my group was the first group to start the presentation. We presented three elements of poetry, The Speaker, Listener, and Imagery. Our presentation went well, and we were able to achieve our goal of providing better understanding of these three elements of poetry to the class. The response of my fellow students was helpful to identify that we met our goals.
Today all the presentation were very good. Each presentation was different, even though two of the presentations were on same topic, and each group presented the topics in unique way. I learned a lot from all the presentation and enjoyed the activities planned by each group. My personal favorite activity which helped me understand Imagery better was presented by Group two, because when they asked to draw the pictures of the provided poems, I was able to visualize the image that poet wanted the reader to see through mind’s eye. Thanks to all for adding to my knowledge about poetry.

Free write: Reflection on today’s presentations
My presentation was based on the sounds and sense of poetry. We began by defining key terms from our section and annotated with the class the opening sonnet of “Romeo and Juliet”. We ended our presentation with two fun, short exercises I believe the class enjoyed. Our goal was to help the class become better and confident poets by using their sounds and senses; we wanted the students to be able to utilize their five senses while reading and writing poetry, and I believe we achieved this. Sometimes we find it difficult to describe what we want to express and the two exercises we did in class helped freshen students’ style of writing. We got positive feedback from both the professor and class. I hope students will consider using these exercises the next time they are asked to write poetry, or just for a creative writing assignment – I know I will.
I enjoyed the other presentations today. Poetry is very complex with many details to pay attention to. Unlike a movie or novel, you have to review a poem a numerous of times to truly find and understand the message the author writes. I enjoyed the second activity we did in class – drawing out poetry. I chose to draw “Messy Room” by Shel Silverstein and “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” by William Wordsworth. Reading the poem fully once, and then going back and reading one line at a time while I drew it on paper depicted imagery really well for me. Before I begin to write my analysis on a series of poetry from “Indivisible”, I am going to do this exercise to help visualize and better understand the poem.

Free Write on Poetry Presentations:
Today my group’s poetry presentation was the last one to go. At first there was a moment of mild panic when I realized that I had forgotten to ask Professor Sabir to prepare a projector for our PowerPoint. Thankfully she was able to rustle one up and we were still able to present. The topic my group presented on was what the terms form, meter, stanza, and lineation were in poetry and how they affect the poet’s work. I think the powerpoint format of our presentation worked very well, allowing information to be passed visually and vocally. Our goal was to inform our fellow students what exactly these technical terms and techniques were in poetry and through the use of many examples I believe we were successful.
As for the other presentations, I really enjoyed them all. The exercises that each group devised were very creative, from drawing out a poem to mixing and matching 7 random nouns and verbs. They were all informative, with the handouts reinforcing the flow of information that the presenters were spouting. My favorite presentation was the one where we were provided photos to stimulate our five senses. The photo that I got was a place which I had never seen yet it piqued my interest with the subject matter, a dome in the style of classical Roman and Greek architecture, complete with three friezes.

Free Write: In Class Presentations
Today’s class presentation was a very good learning experience. I learned more about poetry through presentation than I did reading the definitions. Every group was very unique in how they presented their topic. The group I was in presented the elements of poetry; the Speaker, the Listener and Imagery. I felt we did well, only having a day and a half to prepare. I was very impressed by all the other groups and was especially inspired by the class exercise given by Group 3; sound and sense. I have never considered writing poetry; however the writing exercise sparked my interest. I’m glad we had group presentations as an assignment; it makes the learning process more enjoyable.

Free write about today’s presentations:
Today the presentation went pretty good. My group went second and we presented on the speaker, listener and imagery. At first, I wasn’t sure if we would do everything on the lesson plan we’ve created, but it went smoothly. It was nice that people volunteer to show us their drawing on one of the poems we provided.
Each group was spectacular, and the information they provided will be helpful in our essay. The first presentation was very nice, and providing the different types of imagery. It was helpful when our activity was a quiz on a poem within Indivisible because it will help me identify the speaker, listener and what type of imagery the poet us when I pick a poem for my essay. I also enjoy using the pictures brought in by the third group to help us create our own poem.

Free write – Poetry’s presentation
Today’s presentations were pretty fun and entertaining. It is always great to work in group and show our work to our classmates. It permits us to interact more with them and have fun while learning at the same time. We all worked well, and that is all that matters.
Each presentation was great and really informative. I learned a lot. We all did something different so that was good. I believe our group did great as well. Joanna had a great idea, with the game/exercise we had. I think people liked it.

The presentation went really well, the examples allowed the audience to see what we were talking about, the definitions were short and mostly clear, and the presentation explained our topics enough to provide a good understanding of poetry. The groups did well in presenting their topics, no forgetting of words or examples, and they easily said their points well enough that everyone in the room understood it. The presentations were effective in explaining poetry, and this made the presentations easy to understand.

Free write about todays presentations.
Today my group wenty first to . We presented on the three elements of poetry:The speaker, Listener,and imagernary.I would like to think our presentation went well and that we were able to achieve our goal of providing a better understanding to poetry.
Today all the presentations were great and with a different perspective on how they presented.My very favorite group presentation besides ours was group two,with their unique way for us to look at poetry by envisioning the poem . I was for once loved it because it gave me some unique ideas which is why when it came to the drawing part ,I choose to draw " Toy Eater"which made me visiolize childs room at night ,with the toys on the floor and unneat.

I was the second group to go up and present. My group also presented on the speaker, the listener and imagery. I think my group did a good job and had fun. We started by defining the key terms then reading poems. I like how we made the class draw a picture. It made me feel like a kid again. I was really happy people came up and share their pictures.
The presentations were all good today. I didn’t really have a favorite because each group did something different. The activities were fun. I like the one where we had a picture and imagine we were in the picture and write done things.

Poetry Presentations
Today’s presentations went well and it really helped me prepare for my presentation. I was glad that my group received more people each day so that we could share the load; I am not very good at giving presentations. My group did a presentation on form, stanza, meter, and lineation. I might choose one of these forms for my essay. All the groups were really informative and knew exactly what they were talking about. I liked the first group’s enthusiasm and energy. I enjoyed the presentation where we had to draw an image from the poems we read. The group that passed out the pictures and made us match seven nouns with seven verbs were really creative as well.

In Class Poetry Presentations
I liked today’s presentations from all of the different groups. We learned many poetic devices to further our understanding as up and coming poets. My group presented sounds and senses of poetry, which went well. We got through our lesson plan efficiently and hopefully achieved our goals and objectives. I liked the group activity of imagery where we had to draw out different poems. The activity was interactive and enjoyable for everyone who participated. From this activity, we were able to express our interpretations of the imagery from five different poems. There was another group that presented the idea of imagery and taught the class four different kinds of imagery, which was new and interesting in my opinion. We learned how the four different types of imagery are incorporated into poems and we read unique examples for a better understanding of the lesson. Overall, all the groups did a great job today with informative and interactive activities.
