An Essay Prompt
I would like to write about prejudice. In the story, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, most people have strong racial bias. I plan to analyze how the main characters in the story each face prejudice and discuss where it stems from.

The subject that I would like to write about for my essay would be courage. My question is if Mayella had the courage to stand up to her father, would Tom Robinson still be accused of rape? There are many other examples of courage and characters that display that characteristic.

I think if Mayella had been a courageous person in the first place, she wouldn't have tried to seduce Tom Robinson--instead, she would have been honest about her poor living situation and sought help from the community directly. But I think the question you raise is interesting.
I think Atticus shows great courage throughout the story. I also admire Tom Robinson for speaking honestly about the unfortunate event while testifying in the court.

Tom Robinson was killed for a false acquisition that he was forced to lived, a false acquisition that Bob Ewell decided to live. They both suffered a violent fate, but what did it accomplish?
Both issues were swept under the rug, and neither mockingbird saw the light of justice. Instead the mockingbird saw the darkness in lies...and now they lie back down towards the sky...waiting to see light in the sky, while the world is blinded by the dirt and buried 6 ft under....

“Atticus, the image of justice?”
Harper Lee’s play character Atticus Finch, To Kill a Mockingbird, he represents the symbol of justice for the black citizens in a small town of Maycomb, Alabama. Does Finch’s history have anything to do that made him become a leader of the black folks in a segregated environment? Does Atticus believe that his heart for the black folk is mutual or business? Does he defend justice for human rights, just as Martin Luther King Jr. did years later?

Scout (Jean Louis Finch): She's the narrator of the story. She has a combative streak. She doesn't have fully developed perspectives on racial issues, but throughout the play, she develops appreciaion for her father's poistion in defending Tom Robinson, who is innocent.
She's nine. Younger child of Atticus. Jem is her older brother. She's a tomboy and outspoken. She's outgoing. She spends her summer with Dill.
Dill (Charles Baker Harris): He comes from a different town to stay with his aunt and leaves. But he runs away from his home because his parents neglect him. He is intellectual. He is older than Scout but younger than Jem. In the story, he represents childhood innoncence. He is fascinated with Boo, Arther Radley. He has a good heart.

CHARACTER PROFILES FOR BOB AND MAYELLA EWELL.
Bob Ewell: A drunk and impoverished member of Maycomb whose daughter is the alleged victim in the Robinson Trial. He feeds his large family with support from the state and has a very angry and alienated disposition. The entire Ewell family has a reputation of ignorance, lacking education and tolerance.
Mayella Ewell: One of the many Ewell children. She is nineteen and in charge of the other children, with no contact with the outside world. Mayella would frequently solicit help from Tom Robinson prior to the alleged assault, and he would help her because of her poverty and her overbearing father.

Tom Robinson Profile
Tom Robinson is a 25 year old African-American who has a wife and 3 kids. He is tall and strong, probably around 6’5” who works for money during his spare time. He is also kind and honest. His left arm is crippled from an accident involving a cotton gin. He is not the healthiest person because of his living conditions. He has no education because of his situation but learned from people around him.
