I was actually planning not to attend class on Thursday but am very glad I did. Although I was extremely sick, I gained a lot of insight into the process of poetry. Lauren did a great job at setting the tone and helping everyone through their words. I was able to think clearly about what I wanted to write and articulate my thoughts passionately. Writing my feelings down into tangible words felt liberating. I had to really think back to my past experiences and focus on that spirit. It definitely shed a lot of lost memories and let me appreciate the experiences I've had. Writing enables to release their emotions without any judgments. People find control and safety in writing. Poetry has the power to heal the toughest wounds and inspire someone to be a stronger person. I believe that words really are a way for people to get past their struggles and find a better place - a place of salvation and acceptance.

The poetry workshop was a great idea and was very fun. Lauren had so much enthusiasm and knew how to make writing very fun. I like how she helped us express our feelings on paper, something that isnt very easy to me.
I was really impressed at some of my class mates pieces. They sounded so good, and many of them had a great flow as if a professional wrote them. Lauren really brought out a lot of creativity in some of those people that rarely speak in class. I know that I wrote a piece better than i expected. Lauren was a great teacher and i had a really great time learning how to write poetry.

I was actually excited about the workshop with lauren. i had a great time and this was not my first time being in a workshop with lauren but it was a great experience. Poetry helps many express themselves in different ways whether the peom is bad or good, sad or funny. the workshop helped me let off a lot of stress that day due to certain things that are happening in my life but i am happy i came because it gave me a insight on a new way i could maybe express myself. i really didnt tihink too mch of peotry but since i had the workshop with lauren it gave me a better understanding to why many choose to express themselves through poetry.

I entered the classroom in a lot of pain. I was weighed down from a litany of text messages that were a number of statements that requested and explained why I should allow a friend of mine to leave my life. This is no ordinary love. We are friends, but she is always there. She always picks up to phone and always repsonds. She is ever present that makes her present in my thoughts and heart like no other at this time. I was struggling to focus on whatever was before us and thnkfully this class was all about focusing on what was on my mind: a friend. I wanted to cry, but in the event of being in a classroom, having to read and write, I could not. To say that I cried through my pen would be so cliche...but it is true. What would be more true would be to say that my fingers played like plams that rubbed my back, the keyboard was my back and I released it all into the computer. People got a real glimpse of me that day. Not just of my situation that I deal with almost everyday, but the things that occur in my mind. I write frequently and, therefore, it was apparent. I, therefore, am thankful that I was in that class;am thankful for her insight; am thankful for Youth Speaks and my friend read what I wrote that day. She said that she printed it, went into her roam and wept over it...Ok, she said that she cried, but wept seemed more beautiful. A girl that I was dating also read it and said that I am a healer. It was funny because I never considered myself a healer, but my teacher did once upon a time. I hope that I can heal through my words and I hope that would encourage me to never shut up.

Assignment: Response to Brave New Voices Workshop

I would like to say Thank You to Lauren for coming and doing such an awesome presentation. She brought things out of me that I never would have thought to say out loud. Learning to put thoughts on paper is really therapeutic. The opportunity to articulate thoughts onto paper gives a sense of relief. It was amazing to see how simple it can be to allow your creative side to shine. I look forward to doing more creative pieces in the future.

Free write on Procrastination

The whole purpose on watching the small film called Procrastination is because many of us are falling behind in class. We have been keeping up with the assignments and the due dates. The teacher wants us to realize that we are just wasting our time coming to class unprepared. In the movie they define procrastination in many ways. According to the movie procrastination is when you don’t get things done. It means that you waste your time without completing anything in life. In the film they talk about many ways how people procrastinate, many people want to do many things at the same time that they cant complete one. Procrasination is not a good thing and if it becomes a habit you would never complete anything in life.

Cyber-Response to Brave New Voice Writing Workshop:
Sadly I wasn’t able to attend this workshop due to a family emergency last Thursday. However, from what I hear by just talking to classmates is that the workshop was very informative, and being an avid poetry/spoken word fan I am deeply sadden that I wasn’t able to attend. I hear Lauren Whitehead was very professional and knew how to articulate a good poem by simply jotting down little things before you actually start the poetry part, having a plan before you get started is always a good idea and never really thought about doing so until now.

The poetry workshop was an exciting experience. Poetry helps get some of our most inner emotions out. Personally it was helpful to have some time to sit down and think about that one person that makes my life better. It was interesting how some people wrote about individuals who besides making their lives better they made them worst. Whether it was positive or negative, there were strong emotions in the room created by the reading of poetry. I was never aware of the power of words can have until that day. I strongly respect the people who were brave enough to express such strong feeling to a room full of people. After that day I would see poetry as a way of transforming emotions into words and making others feel those words.

The poetry workshop was not as bad as I thought it would. Lauren seems to me like a pretty cool girl that really likes to get to know people. I am not a poetry person, but if I like the topic I will join in and participate. It was kind of challenging writing a poem with the topic that Lauren came up with. Once getting into the mood it was not that hard writing the poem because you just had to fill in the blank. Overall it was great to have Lauren in class for a day at least we did not have to some class work.

The poetry workshop was so interesting and fun. Lauren is an open-minded and very cool person. When she was reading her poems to us, she sounded just like the poetry writers from the video about poetry that we watched in class. It sounded just same her tone and everything. I never wrote a poem before so it was interesting to me. Also it was interesting to hear other people's poems. I think we all had a great time with Lauren.
