The Message

We read the introduction to The Message, by Felicia Pride. Students wrote collaboratively after a brief discussion about the key ideas Pride raises about the topic hip hop culture and more specifically its music.

We divided the essay sections into an introductory paragraph, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Students were to include one paraphrase, a direct quote and one block quote in the essay. We then shared.

Post those paragraphs here. If you missed the class then you can write the entire essay. I told students to incorporate Jeff Chang, Michael Eric Dyson and Byron Hurt in the introductory discussion.

I was a little hard on the folks that wrote the introduction...it started out fine, but they didn't finish. The other groups did well, especially the group who did the conclusion, although the body paragraphs were well written and strong.

This was a first attempt and we will continue writing these types of essays. We didn't get to the Hurt drafts and planning sheets and outlines. Please post those below at the link above. Students give each other feed back. Writers tell us what you want us to read for and what kind of assistance you are looking for.

Now that you have Pride, you can use this writing as another source for your essay due next week. Remember, bring in a paper copy on Tuesday, Sept. 23.

What else? Call me, we are going to try to get group tickets for Common. Students get a discount, so if you already have tickets, I hope you inquired.

We listened to Grandmaster Flash's The Message on You Tube. We'll listen to it again Tuesday. I'll post the link here later. I have to run now.

Felicia Pride states (Hip Hop doesn’t go out of style and isn't dictated by universal music groups or clear channel.)
I believe that Ms.Pride is indicating that in her world, Hip Hop is educational and will never go out of style. For example Spinners was the hype when they first came out, everybody wanted them. The rappers had them in there videos, but they slowly played. Hip Hop is pure, not driven by the money making executives that try to force their brand on us.

American Culture Vs. Hip Hop Culture
Intro
Loren, Ronnie, Jennifer, and Robin
American Culture unconsciously affects so many aspects of our society, one being hip hop. Originally hip hop was not just about music; it was a movement in which youth expressed their ideas with the purpose of communicating to the public. In various perspectives though, hip hop has drifted aways from its original intent mostly due to the influence of American culture. Many hip hop scholars such as Micheal Eric Dyson, Byron Hurt and Felicia Pride argue that the music and life style have transformed into something negative. "The Message", by Felicia Pride, also supports the idea that the music has changed and that society has impacted the music more than the music impacting society. Felicia writes, "Hip hop issues don't play out in us, our issues play out in hip hop (26)."

Felicia Pride confesses her love for hiphop and that it's been with her since her upbringing. Pride extracts empowering lessons embedded within the genres most popular songs. Growing up with hip-hop, she has come to realize the way it shaped how she thinks, writes, and reacts, making her the person she is today

Pride is a woman from New York who has a deep love for hip hop which drove her to writing this book. She described hip hop as being something that makes us more of who we are. she writes, "hip-hip can be a positive muse for our actions but it can not be an activator," meaning that hip hop is like a canvas, we can use it to express our art but it wont motivate us to change. The words used in hip hop set our mood the same way the colors on an art piece do.

Conculsion:
Kimberly, Aerin, Ben H. and Robert F.

Felica Pride demonstrates how hip hop has infulenced America culture in a positive way. Felica Pride explains how "In my day to day, I quote hip hop lyrics as life defining mantras. I recall lines and ideas from songs and as a way to explain this crazy existence.... There are tons of rhymes like this that can, in an instant, describe my ambitions, dreams, and my life,"(xix). In comparison to Dyson and Hurt in regards to American culture, Pride sheds a brighter light on hip hop. She reminds us that hip hop does not control us, but we control hip hop for this reason we should not give hip hop a bad name. American culture is responsible for how hip hod is viewed through its various sterotypes.
