Students are coming to class under and unprepared. Also, many students are not completing their on-line assignments. These assignments are prewriting work geared to the 4 research essays due this semester. The freewrite is a way to think about the topics and decide whether or not it is one you would like to explore in depth.
The research essays, the first due October 1, are scholarly research which uses a practitioner in the art form, whatever it is, as a model to talk about the genre. For instance, if you decide to look at women in hip hop, you could use Aya de Leon as a model or Faviana Rodriguez, two women who are seeped in hip hop culture--Faviana is a print maker and visual artist who has won many awards and has an organization in Oakland and Aya is a professor at UC Berkeley and also a poet, playwright who has also won numerous awards for her work. They are great models because there is a body of work written about them and they have work which is
accessible.
Today in class students received a rubric along with copies of the Initial Planning Sheet, 3-Part Essay, Topical Invention.

Response to Syllabus
I personally enjoyed reading the syllabus; I liked the fact that is written in a letter format that aloud students to get to know the teacher’s personality and work values. I like Hip-hop, but I never really saw it as being a revolutionary way of expression; it was more of the kind of music that you can dance at the club and listen to while you are driving. After I read the syllabus I realized that my perspective on Hip-hop was really poor and that I was ignorant about the genre; reading all the questions that Professor Sabir sates in the syllabus made me curious about Hip-hop lyrics and their meaning. Only the fact that as a class we are going to be able to form group discussion, about topics that to me did not have a lot to do with Hip-hop seems interesting; the relation to sexism and Hip-hop awakens my curiosity even more. The only thing that seemed to be missing was a list of all the assignment and due dates that we are going to have during the semester; I know this is not exactly a traditional syllabus, but a list of all the assignments and their due dates would make students like me happy. It would be easier to keep track of the work I have to do.

The syllabus was very informative and easy to understand. I especially like how it has the date when research papers and presentation are due. This was very helpful for me because I can highlight the dates when everything is due on my calendar and this gives me much time to better prepare my schedule and organize it. I also liked how it has other reference books listed so I could always have another source of information on the topic that we are discussing.
What I enjoyed reading the most on the syllabus is how it gives a sidebar of what the class is about and the topics we will be discussing. What I enjoy about the class so far is that it is looking at deeper issues within the hip hop culture.
The syllabus was useful to me. The due dates were very helpful for when you wanted things done. It would have been nice of you to go over the syllabus with the class to further specify some things, so I will end the blog with a few questions:
In the grading portion of the sylla
bus, what is "Peer Reviews from Lab teachers/class aide..?"
How do you grade our blog input?
What do you expect in our portfolio?
Is the vocabulary log a mandatory assignment, or for our own benefit?
When is our midterm?
This syllabus is helpful. It is nice for it to be mapped out for us exactly what our grades are to be comprised of. I still feel like there should be a list of assignments due as well. I would have to say this english class is structured much differently to those i have taken in the past. But i like that, it keeps it interesting.

My response to the syllabus
Professor Sabir...
I am really excited after reading the syllabus. I enjoy learning and discussing hip hop culture and I look forward to researching some of the topics in the near future. It was very clear what you are expecting of us for the semester. I would like to know if you are stating that there will be a teacher available in the writing center to proof read and sign off on our papers or can we have any teacher from COA read our work? Also, would you be able to proof read it?
The syllabus was very informative. It outlined the topics that will be required of us this semester. The analysis of hip-hop as a movement rather than a musical genre intrigued me because I come from a traditional Chinese background. I have never taken the opportunity to go into depth about Hip-Hop and what it really is about. I appreciate Professor Sabir’s chosen subject matter this semester.
The Meaning of the Name
In the short story "The Meaning of the Name",it talks about the alter ego of many artist. Many artist never really expressed their alter egos besides beyonce` but if we look back like the author mentions other artist are the same way but we didn't know that. Many artist received their names through and from their alter egos. Their alter ego are the ones that faces the huge crowds of fans, the media and the shyness that many artist have. Many groups of artist that are big in the industry has an alter ego that we may not think of. like say for instance Gang Starr talks about Shawn Carter aka Jay-Z. Now this man is known for many different names to him being a corporate head of a label. having multiple personalities or persona's in the hip hop industry is the best way to go because its their way of making it in the industry and it is really helpful because it shows in their record sales.

Response to Syllabus
I really am a student that enjoys reading the teacher's syllabus. To me the syllabus is really important because it tells you what the assignments are and when they are due. The syllabus is great because you can always look at it if you have questions about the class. Looking through Mrs. Sabir syllabus I saw what the class was going to be about and the assignments that she was going to assign. I saw that the class was going to have the hip-hop theme and everything we do is going to be related to hip-hop. I am a little worried because i do not know anything about hip-hop, I have never read a hip-hop novel and that maes me feel that the class is going to be a little challenging. Even though I do not know much about hip-hop I am really excited about the class and I look forward to learning about hip-hop in class.
