Today, Sherrlynne and myself did a presentation on form in poetry and lineation. Given the fact that we did not have an opportunity to physically meet and go over the presentation, I thought it went well. We worked very well as a team, were able to split the work up between us and put it together. We both presented, at least I feel that we presented the information to inform and educate or at least reiterate information that was already known.

I really hate talking in front of groups and doing presentations like this, but this time around, I felt comfortable and confident. The presentation, as I feel, was very organized.

Response to Poetry Presentation

I really enjoyed Marie Heide and Sherrlynne Apostel presentation today on the various forms of poetry. It seemed like it came right on time, because I have just picked up on my poetry again. I learned that there are 55 forms of poetry. They introduced various forms such as, Villanelle, Sonnet, Ballad, Sestina, and Chinquapin. My favorite form was the Chinquapin and favorite poem the villanelle, Mad Girl’s Love Poem. The repetition in the latter was really poetic and I really felt her longing for her lover (even though her longing may be in vain).
I also found a Tupac Shakur song called The Ballad of a Dead Soulja. I don’t know if it is indeed a ballad. Any feedback on this?
Yeah, ballad of a dead soulja
Its just the balled of a dead soulja
This is the ballad of a dead soulja
Ballad of a dead soulja
[Verse 1]
The plan
to take command of the whole family
Though underhanded
to be the man it was planned
all my road doggs
official mob figures
love to act up
the first to bomb when we rob niggaz
I could be
lost in my own mind
to be the boss only thoughts
grippin chrome nines
niggaz get tossed up
war scars battle field memories
swore saw the devil in my empty glass of Hennessey
talking to a nigga on a tight leash
screaming fuck the police
as I ride through the night streets
little child running wild
towards his danger
what's the cause
don't be alarmed death to all strangers
maybe I'm a mad man
a pistol grabbing nigga
unleash the sand man
promise a merciless retaliation
nothing is colder
close your eyes
hear the ballad of a dead soulja

The presentation was very good. It seemed to be well rehearsed and was very informative. I would never have guessed that there are 55 different types of poetry. My favorite part of the presentation was the reading of all the different poems. I especially liked the one about the dead person. I also thought that the "homework" given to us was fun.

I enjoyed the presentation this morning with Sherrylyn and Marie. I would never have guessed they never met physically to rehearse. I would have never guessed that there are 55 forms. Wow! I liked the variety of the poems they included as examples.

I also liked the way I could interrupt them and ask questions and they never seemed ruffled or distracted from their plan.

I haven't written a poem in a long while. I went to a concert Sunday with a organization I am a part of: California Coalition for Women Prisoners (CCWP). I was in the company of women who'd been shackled to hospital beds when giving birth--Kim was present at the concert with her little boy, born in captivity. Another woman released after 27 years behind bars was learning to use her cell phone camera. This was her first outting since her release less than a month ago. Still another woman joined us who'd hijacked an airplane for the revolution. She is now working in the SF Sherriff's department. Another woman is an attorney and UC Berkeley Boalt Hall professor who has devoted her life to fighting domestic violence through the Habeas Project, a program for women who are incarcerated for defending their lives--

I was with women who create new worlds with their hands—telling stories with energy—kinetic enlivening, healing massage. I was with domestic violence survivors who now sing their peace and share their stories with others—

The songs Sweet Honey sang sounded like they knew we were in the audience—songs about putting down the loads we’ve been carrying around—the baggage we tote without toll. At least we could be getting paid (smile). The all women accapella group sang songs about the human condition and our need for each other if we are to get clear and stay free.

I am writing myself into this poetry assignment. I am still in A-205. I need to read papers. I am listening to Sweet Honey’s 25th Anniversary album getting so inspired.

Today Marie and I presented in the section of poetry form and lineation. Like Marie stated earlier her and I did not have any time to look over the slide show and rehearse. I thought the presentation was simple and straight to the point. The presentation was organized in a way that our audience can easily comprehend. The only thing I would of changed was to make the presentation more interactive with the audience. Other than that I thought we did and awesome job.

The ballad was interesting but the assigment was to create a cinquain not a ballad. However, the tupac song is indeed a ballad.

We really enjoyed reading your chuck norris cinquain. It followed the correct format and it was super cool. Thank you.

Professor Sabir
The cinquain that you wrote was very interesting however, your poem did not follow the proper arrangement. The last line of your poem was suppose to contain just one word.

Thank you Sara. I'm glad our presentation helped you understand that area. I would love to hear some of your poetry. You should even place it in your presentation I think our class as well as Professor Sabir would enjoy it.
