Bay Area Cypher: A Freestyle Documentary
In the film “Bay Area Cypher: A Freestyle Documentary”, many artist come and discuss the views f the hip hop culture and its ciphers behind it. These young people are not just African American descent. One of the artist in the film said that the cipher is more like a community meeting you would attend where everybody are you is being themselves but expressing themselves through their lyrics or just letting go of some stress for that day. It is like a talk with some one that is one there for you and when your talk is done or in this case your poem, song or rap is not it’s like a sense of relief being taken off your shoulders. The Hip Hop cipher is a way the hip hop community gets a chance to express themselves any way want without worrying about whether it is acceptable in the eyes of others but in this cipher that’s doesn’t matter , it’s just express yourself and be happy.
Another artist said “Hip Hop is like a reflection of what’s going on in life whether it is good or bad.” This is actually true because many artists, poets or rappers mainly rap about what’s going on in their life today or what they see happening to someone that is close to them. If we sit and think about it many poems that are written are life changing events or just it is just giving their readers a reality check which is helpful. Hip Hop now is about life with the struggles or without the struggles. I guess when artist get a chance to rap, sing or speak poetry about life changing events or struggles it gives the audience a glance into the life they once lived or the life they are actually living today which is very helpful in many eyes of the audience or fans or just future artist themselves.
Furthermore an artist brought up the idea of hip hop being the community which is a great analogy on the hip hop world. The words of this artist were: “Hip Hop is our community and communication with one another.” Now when I heard that it stuck out to me because I really agree with this statement. Hip Hop is our community because that how we get to know one another is through hip hop. Hip hop is like our silent saying to our community meaning we don’t have to literally say what we are meaning but the community will catch on to what the artist is saying. We saying things through our music that many can’t understand but they hip hop community do understand what is being said. One other saying that really stuck with me was the saying “music is magic. You can’t see it but you can feel it.” This is true you can’t see music but if a song is really good and you understand where that artist or poet is coming from you will feel the music, it will be going all through your body and it will make you want to dance just to show your feelings for this particular song. Music is the voice for the hip hop community whether you can see it, feel it or just understand where it is coming from when it is said by the artist.

Response to film Bay Area Cypher
The short film Bay Area Cypher by Idris Hassan is an exciting documentary that shows the culture and meaning of Cypher in the Bay Area. The Cypher is a way for some rappers to let all types of feeling and expression out to the world. Young artist get the opportunity to express who they are and what they think through the ciphers. Cypher is pure freestyle, there is no making mistakes in it; the cipher allows young rappers to express truly what they think and feel. Since there is no rules or sketch to follow artist can express the things they carry deep inside without having to worry about what others might think. Cypher is a way of expression, an expression that speaks of our everyday life situations, our culture and the way we communicate with each other.
Cypher is communication, is the way young artist get to express and communicate their ideas to others. Cyphers consist in forming a circle in which all the people who are part of it get to freestyle rhymes and express anything that they want. In a way cyphers are like a MySpace or a blog in which individuals get to communicate to others what they think without having to talk to someone directly, is like if they are talking to themselves, but letting others hear what they are saying.
Culture takes a big role when it comes to cyphers. Everything that young artist express has to do with the life they live and the people they interact with. In other words everything that rappers express in the cyphers is their culture and how they live and deal with it day by day. Listening to the rappers that were part of the film most of them would talk about their life and who they are, they would talk about the factors that define the culture they are part of.

Assignment” Response to the film “Bay Area Cypher: A Freestyle Documentary”
After watching the film, “Bay Cypher: A Freestyle Documentary” by Idris Hassan, I was intrigued by the many different accounts of what a cypher can be defined as. Even after I saw the film, I was curious to find out what the dictionary defined the word cipher as. When looking on dictionary.com, the first definition for the word cipher was “zero”. The first thing that comes to mind when I think of the word zero is nothing or without something. However, when you think about the shape of a zero it is circle. The circle is defined as “a closed plane curve consisting of all points at a given distance from a point within it called the center.” That is a much better account of what best describes a cypher. The cypher is not just a “circle” or a “zero” as defined by the dictionary; it is a transfer of energy within a group.
The gathering of a group of people that come together for an opportunity to channel their spirits, and the power of their gift is amazing. I would compare a cypher to a wheel on a car. Each section of a tire needs to be held tightly together in order for it to continue to move, thus the factor that helps the car get from one place to the next. A group of people gathered in a circle for the reason of coming together to show freedom of expression and the release of positive energy is what keeps them going. One artist in the film compares it to an alcoholic’s anonymous meeting. If you think about an “AA” meeting, it can be best described as a support group. It is a gathering in which people come to share their thoughts, but most importantly they are sharing their thoughts on something they have in common.
Zakiya Harris, one of the freestyle artists in the film describes it as something that comes “from the soul”, it is “spontaneous”. Freestyle is an improvisation, which in my opinion is something that shows one’s true gift. As Zakiya stated, it is something that comes from the soul. The word soul takes on such a heavy meaning by itself. The word soul means “the principle of life, feeling, thought, and action in humans, regarded as a distinct entity separate from the body.” It is so amazing to see so many people from all cultures come together for a common goal. The idea of pulling together in a spirit and soul filled circle to channel and pull energy from each is such an amazing thing. Cyphers are what keep us moving and thus should be considered are “wheels” to life and our future.

When people talk to others about their problems, it helps them a lot because it makes them calm and relaxed. If we hold all our anger and problems that will make us angry and sad.
